Print Care

A note about the screenprint process

Each print is carefully crafted by hand using the traditional screen printing technique, a process that gives each piece its unique, handmade character. The Private Press, a contemporary screen printing studio, brings their expertise to every print, ensuring the highest quality and attention to detail. They specialise in fine art editions for artists, designers, and illustrators, and approach every project with meticulous care.

Although I strive to produce flawless prints, small imperfections such as specks of ink may occasionally appear. These are a natural part of the screen printing process and contribute to the authenticity and craftsmanship of each print. Rather than flaws, these marks add character, making each print one of a kind.

Unpacking your print

Brrrrrrrrtttttt! Your print is cleared for landing!

I know that rolling prints isn’t ideal, but delivering them flat incurs extra costs—more than flying a Spitfire over the White Cliffs of Dover. Don’t worry—unrolling your print will be as smooth as a perfect touchdown.

Follow these tips to keep your print safe and sound:

  • DO NOT FORCE THE PRINT FLAT
(Yes, I’m shouting—it’s that important!) Avoid squashing it with books or rushing the process. Your print just needs a little patience and gentle care to stretch its wings (pun intended).

Preparation: Before you begin

  • Clean hands or gloves: Wash and dry your hands thoroughly to avoid smudges, or wear clean cotton/nitrile gloves.
  • Flat, clean surface: Use a large, flat, and clean surface like a table covered with a cloth or cutting mat to unroll your print safely.

Step A: Unpack your print

Carefully remove the tube caps and gently tip the print out. If it’s snug, remove both caps and push from one side while gently pulling from the other. Your print will come out tightly rolled—don’t worry, that’s completely normal!

Step B: Let it relax

After unpacking, leave your print rolled up and resting in a warm room overnight. This allows it to acclimate naturally. The next day, gently unroll the print and place it on a clean, flat surface. Let it rest naturally for another 8–10 hours to flatten gradually.

Important: Avoid forcing it flat by pressing, squashing, or using heavy objects. Patience is key to keeping your print in perfect condition!

Step C: Ready for display

Once relaxed, your print will be much flatter and ready for framing. Frame it up, and it’ll look stunning on your wall!

Framing and storage tips

  • Frame promptly: Protect your print by framing it behind UV-protective glass to preserve its colour and quality.
  • Safe storage: If framing isn’t immediate, store the print flat in an acid-free portfolio or between sheets of archival paper.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Don’t force it flat: Forcing the unrolling process can cause creases or damage the ink.
  • Avoid moisture: Always work in a dry area to prevent warping or ink issues.
  • Don’t touch the ink: Screenprint ink is often raised or textured—direct contact can smudge or damage it.

I hope your print finds its perfect spot and brings you joy for years to come! If you have any questions or need help, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Cheers,
Nick
